Choosing a camping area

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
The choice of a suitable area for camping is very important, so you can enjoy the pleasure to be among the nature and to avoid some risk for you and your comfort.
If the location where you wanna go has no official camping area, then look for a provided place where you can camp. If there is not, choose a place that is not privately owned and is not  next to noisy road. Furthermore, for security reasons, it is better for you to be near other people.
Places with good views in most cases are windy, so comply with the peculiarities of the terrain, the equipment and the clothing you have.

At camping or not, there are some simple rules of respect with which you will get full enjoyment from the walk:

Flat surface – the place on which you are going to build the camping tent should be flat – it shouldn’t be on big slope, bumps or holes.  If, however, there is a slope, it shouldn’t be very big, so you can situate the tent in a way that your head should be on a higher level.

Clean well – inspect well the area under the tent and remove all stones, branches, cones and other objects which will create discomfort when you lie down.
Shadow – if camping in the summer, and not only, it is advisable  to choose  spot for your tent. Often these are areas under trees, which prevents your tent to be bombed with bird excrement. But the positive side of the shadow areas are that you will be able to sleep until later, because when the sun heat your tent, you will begin to undress. Perhaps the best to choose is a place that shady in the morning and sunny only in the afternoon.
Higher ground area – camping tent shouldn’t be at low ground spot, because if it starts to rain, the water will pass through your chosen location, and even may be collected there. If the best place is still such a low one and there is a chance to rain, make a channel around the tent so it can be higher than the surrounding terrain. The purpose of the channel is to direct the water and the tent to be kept dry.
Fireplace – when make the camping fireplace, make sure it is at a suitable location, which will not allow the wind to blow towards the tent. Collect dry wood and do not cut live trees, even branches.  Then put out the fire with water and do not leave food outside the tent and around the fireplace, because it will attract animals. Depending on the place where you and the animals are, this may pose a risk to your safety or at least to be noisy at night.
